One of the most important parts of ethical aesthetic care is knowing when not to treat. Maybe a patient’s expectations are unrealistic. Maybe they’ve had too much work already. Maybe something just feels off. But what happens after you say no?
Too often, the answer is nothing. No guidance, no follow-up, just a polite rejection. And while the clinical decision may be the right one, it can leave patients feeling dismissed, confused, or ashamed — especially if they’re already struggling with self-image, anxiety, or deeper emotional issues. Saying no isn’t enough. Having a clear next step is part of your duty of care.
Referring a patient to their GP or suggesting therapy might seem like the responsible thing to do — but in practice, it tends to go nowhere. GPs are overstretched. Therapy can be expensive, overwhelming, or simply not what the patient is ready for. And without support, many go elsewhere, looking for a practitioner who will say yes. The PREPÆRE™ Patient Hub was created to fill that gap — offering an easy, accessible place to send patients when aesthetic treatment isn’t the right call.
About the PREPÆRE™ Patient Hub
The PREPÆRE™ Patient Hub is a free, open-access resource all aesthetic practitioners can share with any patient — whether you use PREPÆRE™'s Wellbeing Check-in Tool or not. It’s designed for moments when treatment is being declined, delayed, or when you just want to nudge the patient to look into the issues commonly affecting people who seek cosmetic treatments.
You can print the QR code, include it in your clinic materials, or send it directly to a patient after a consultation. It’s a gentle way to help patients understand their mindset, reflect on their emotional readiness, and, if needed, access support — on their own terms.

The Patient Hub includes:
Educational Guides covering issues like Body Dysmorphic Disorder, perception drift, disordered eating, muscle dysmorphia, hair loss, and appearance-related anxiety. These are written in warm, accessible language to help patients understand themselves — without shame or judgement.
Self-Help Resources: curated tools, reading lists, apps, and guided exercises to help patients process their feelings and reflect on their goals before pursuing treatment.
Mental Health Directory: a diverse and growing list of psychologists, therapists, and holistic support services. Patients can choose someone who fits their needs, budget, and background — without being funnelled into a one-size-fits-all referral.
Crisis Support & Helplines: Links to charities and helplines including immediate options for those who may need more urgent support.
When to Refer: The Scenarios Practitioners Face Every Day
There’s a wide range of reasons a patient might not be the right fit for treatment — but every single one requires compassion and clarity, not just refusal. Here’s when the Patient Hub should be offered:
When a patient seems affected by perception drift You suspect they’ve lost objectivity or have had too many procedures already. A polite refusal isn’t enough — they need help reconnecting with their baseline and understanding what’s driving their desire for more.
When there are signs of deeper psychological issues Whether it’s BDD, disordered eating, or generalised distress, you’re not a mental health professional — but you can direct them to relevant support.
When you’re postponing treatment Maybe they’re not ready right now. Maybe you want to see them again after time to reflect. The Patient Hub fills the gap — offering a safe, accessible next step that keeps them supported while you pause.
When the patient’s expectations don’t align with reality You’re worried they won’t be happy no matter what you do. Sending them to the Hub shows you care — without putting pressure on them to book elsewhere.

Because saying no isn’t the end of the conversation — it’s the start of something more supportive.
The Patient Hub gives you a clear, compassionate next step. Whether you’re turning down treatment, pressing pause, or simply feeling unsure, you can direct patients to a resource that helps them reflect, reset, and explore support in their own time.
You don’t need a subscription to use it. Just download the QR code and share it however works best for your clinic. And if you’re looking to make psychological safeguards a standard part of every consultation, learn more about the PREPÆRE™ Wellbeing Check-In here.
